How to Clean a DE Filter
Backwashing your DE Filter does not get out all the dirt and debris. Therefore, you
must tear down your DE filter at least once a year to ensure top performance of you
filter. Follow the steps below:
1. Turn off the pump.
2. Open the air valve.
3. Use wrench to loosen band clamp around the center of the filter.
4. Remove the top.
5. Remove the grid assembly by pulling straight up while moving grid assembly
back and forth.
6. Hose off the grid assembly. If you are familiar with how the grids are
assembled and can put them back together, remove each grid and hose
them off.
7. Once grid assembly is clean, reinsert grid assembly into the filter housing.
8. Tighten clamp (tap on clamp with small hammer as you are tightening the
nut.).
9. When you are sure the clamp is tight, start pump and bleed off air through
the air relief valve on the top of the filter. Do not stand over the filter ! Once
water comes out of the air relief valve, close the valve.
10. Add 1-1# coffee can of DE per 5 SQ FT of filtering area (i.e. 48 SQ Ft Filter =
10 1-1# coffee cans of DE) directly into skimmer with pump running.
