Water Testing for Swimming Pools & Spas
Water testing seems easy enough, but a few factors can seriously affect the accuracy of the test. Following a few tips will help to ensure that your tests are accurate:
* Water should be circulating before you take your sample. If the system has been
shut off, turn it on for a few minutes.
* Rinse the sample vial 2 or 3 times with pool/spa water before you take your
sample. This eliminates any contamination from previous tests.
* Sample the water from 18 inches below the surface.
* Do not take samples near the return lines. Water re-entering has just been filtered
and may have been chlorinated. It is different from the rest of the pool/spa water.
* Water temperature should be between 60 & 80 degress F.
* Perform tests as soon as possible after taking the sample.
* Carefully handle samples to be tested later. Cap them tightly, and don't expose
them to excessive temperatures or sunlight.
* Make sure all reagents are fresh. Replace reagents annually and store them
tightly capped in a cool, dark place. Be certain not to interchange caps on bottles
of liquid reagent.
* Carefully measure the sample of water to be tested. Be certain water is on the
fill line.
* Don't interchange sample vials.
* Follow directions carefully. If 5 drops are called for -- add 5 drops. No more and
no less.
* Add reagents by holding the bottle vertically above the sample vial and adding
slowly.
* Mix the test sample properly. Use caps provided - not your fingers, which can
contaminate the sample. Never shake when mixing. Always swirl in a circular
motion or invert a few times.
* Read results under the right conditions. Hold the vial at eye level. Look through
the middle part of the sample against a white background or the back of the
instruction card. Don't wear sunglasses or read results in direct sunlight.
* Don't dispose of completed test samples in pool or spa. Rinse the sample vials
well after testing.
* Keep all chemicals and reagents out of the reach of children.
